This book was the first paranormal book that I read after more than a year reading full of contemporary romance books. It marked my comeback to my paranormal root which had been the genre that made me fall in love with reading novels in the first place. Thanks to Twilight. You know what? I enjoyed it. After devouring contemporary romance for a long time, I think it’s time for me to try another genre. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I picked up this book since I believed my taste has completely changed. It took a miracle to make me enjoy a paranormal story again. What made me love this story? It is pure romance, which is MY THING. It made me go back to the year when I’d first discovered Twilight saga and fell head-over-heels in love with the series. The story is completely different with Twilight, obviously, but the feel was kind of the same. Kind of.

What is it about? The story follows a fifteen-year-old girl, Darcy Turner, who had a crush on a seventeen-year-old boy, Jack Beauloup, in her school. However, she felt that her feeling toward him was one-sided. He never acknowledged her or gave her the kind of attention she wanted. He completely ignored her but it never made her give up. She still hoped that someday he would talk to her. Until one day it happened. He did not just talk, he kissed her. It was the best day. However, not long from that event, she heard that he’d already left the town. Left her. She was heartbroken. That kiss with Jack had stayed with her for twenty years, through almost all of her adult life. He was his first love that she couldn’t forget. Until one day, after twenty years without any contact, he came back in town, to her life and turn her life and heart in a roller coaster of emotion.

However, despite all the overwhelming emotion that she was in, because of her longtime longing for him, she happily accepted him in her life and their relationship took off since then.

“You came back to Carlisle for me?”

“Only for you. I would never have returned if not for you.. But I’m bound to you, Darcy Turner. I belong to you. Until I die.”

But he has a secret. A BIG SECRET, which I believe you have already known who he is. 😉 But I just want to tell you that it is more than what you’ve already known. There is so much about him that would leave you surprised. All I can say that yes he was not human and the fact broke her and made her overwhelmed with anger and pain at the same time.

“Anger welled up inside of Darcy. For the kiss that had changed her world. For the confused years of soul flight. For the man who walked into her life almost two weeks ago, who she loved more deeply, more completely, than she had ever loved any other being, whom she knew she would love for as long as she lived. And anger bubbled up inside of her like spewing lava. Anger for his deception. Anger for his choosing her. Anger that he wasn’t just a regular human being. Anger that his nature was so brutal. Anger that she loved him, but was also repulsed by him. White, hot anger—the type that made people hurtful, unforgivable things.”

The plot is interesting and refreshing although it’s not completely original in my honest opinion. I enjoyed it a lot but not fully. So, what was missing? The whole story is narrated by the third person that made me hard to connect with her feelings and thoughts. It would have had more impact on me had it been from her point of view. I felt like I was listening to someone else telling them instead of experiencing them myself. It made me unable to connect with her.

In addition to that, how she was processing things was kind of shallow for me. It didn’t provide enough details that would make me feel what it would have been like to be her, being in her head, feeling what she was feeling and experiencing things with her. I was left unsatisfied to the point that I once even considered to put the book down for good.

However, around 60 percent into, the story started to grow on me when it shifted from her point of view to HIS. Even though it was still narrated by the third person, it was deep, moving, very detailed that made room for me to get to know him better and eventually connect with him. I kind of understood the reason he chose to leave her (a little bit, not fully, though), his life when he was growing up, and most importantly, his feeling about her ALL THOSE YEARS when they’d been apart. I was consumed and couldn’t put the book down. My enthusiasm was back on in the flash and grew to the climax. I loved him. I adored him.

“Listen to me. I love you. With everything I am. With everything I’ll ever be.”

“Jack—“ she sobbed.

“That’s all I wanted to say. That’s all I wanted you to know. No matter what happens between us, Darcy Turner…I love you forever.”

WOW. It’s official, I’m falling in love with him. He is my new favorite hero.

He let out the breath he was holding, clenching his jaw with the force and fury of his longing, his frustration. To have come this close to having her, only to lose her…it was mind-boggling in the worst kind of way.”

I was feeling his fear of losing her that really broke my heart. My mind and emotion were over the place that I couldn’t control. He has made me not only finish the book but anxiously waiting for the next book that will come in the next two days (thank God), which I hope I will like or even love more than I did this book. I recommend this series to everyone who loves Twilight saga with more mature characters. Just to warn you a little bit, though. If you are a picky reader like I am, please be patient until you get to the second half of the book. It will be worth it, I promise.
