As you know, I enjoy Mafia romances and always has a fascination for them. That was the reason I wanted to read this book. The story follows a detective named Gabrielle who has her eyes to find the killer of her husband. She had been assigned to the case despite her personal connection and had been on the right path to take him down when she got shot. In the hospital, she met a guy named Luca who was a patience with the same case. He got shot in the chest as well. Their brief encounter then led him to invite her to his restaurant. Even though her focus has been on revenge for her husband’s death, she is missing something in her heart. A connection to someone. A romance that she used to have with her husband. Unable to forget the guys she met in the hospital, she decides to go to his restaurant with some of her friends to see him. To her

Even though her focus has been on revenge for her husband’s death, she is missing something in her heart. A connection to someone. A romance that she used to have with her husband. Unable to forget the guys she met in the hospital, she decides to go to his restaurant with some of her friends to see him. To her surprise, he still remembers her and their attraction to each other is instant and undeniable. Can they survive all the things surrounding them and both of their pasts?

“Deep down in your very heart, you want the kind of vengeance only I can give you… Beneath your uniform beats a rebel heart. That’s how we found our way together.”

What did I think about the story?

Luca is the kind of hero those who are the fans of alpha males would love. He is super handsome, dark, powerful, intense, possessive, and protective alpha that will do everything to the woman he cares. I love all the qualities in his character. Moreover, even though he used to be a playboy, he turns out to be a great lover when it comes to the woman he loves. I enjoyed seeing how he treated her. All his protectiveness toward her made me swoon. However, I didn’t like the way he treated his son in the beginning even though he then grew on me as the story progressed.

Their instance attraction did bother me a lot considering her mental state relating to her husband’s passing at the beginning. It erased some of her characteristics as a strong heroine in my mind. Moreover, I couldn’t see the reasons for their attraction since their relationship felt merely physical without any emotional connection. I would have liked to see more time for her to sort through her feelings before them getting physical, and I would have loved to see them getting to know each other first without sexual encounters. It would have left more impact to me and have me connected to them as a couple had all their interactions not been dominated by sex.

I loved the actions, the twists, the turns and the intrigue they brought along with touches of humor. They kept me reading and anticipating. However, some of the supporting characters did take over the main story at times and it slowed down the progress of it. Some of them didn’t seem to be necessary since they didn’t add anything to the main story. It resulted in the whole story felt progressing so slow with the things that could have been cut. Those moments bored me and took me away from the story at times. However, Mateo saved everything with his cuteness whenever he was around and I couldn’t stop smiling. 🙂

All in all, this is Sarah Castille is a new author to me and LUCA is my first of hers wich has so much potential and will definitely not be the last despite my issues. I’m curious about the first book in the series wich I heard was even better. LUCA is the best book if you are a fan of alpha males, suspense, sexy love story, but fans of emotional love stories with boundaries of some sensitive subjects might find this story lacking and, at times, quite offensive.

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me this ARC for an honest review)

I do love a strong alpha male but this romance sounds like it had a few issues. Great review!

  2. I do think you will really love Nico, even though I enjoyed this one quite a bit, Nico is my favorite so far. I also got a little turned off by his early treatment of his son but at least he redeems himself eventually. I am curious to see what this author comes up with the next book.
