Weekly Recap – Blog Issues and What I Have Learned

GBB Weekly Recap

Hello, everyone. We’re back again with our weekly recap in which I talk about what has been going on in the last week. As you have noticed from the title, I had another blog issue. However, before I talk further about the topic, I want to talk to all my dear friends who live in the areas which were impacted by the storms. I have been saddened by the news and hope you along with your loved ones are safe. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Hopefully, everything will get to normal soon. #hugs

For blog update, I had another blog issue last week. As some of you might remember, in the last week’s Sunday Post, I talked how frustrating I was when my blog stopped running and how relieved I was when it was finally running. Well, on Monday morning, I did my usual check up on the blog and found out that the blog wasn’t running AGAIN. I tried to access the WP-admin but failed. I couldn’t open the website! I contacted the server and explained the problems. They tried to help and asked me to wait a few hours. When I tried to open the web and checked it, it was still not running and I still couldn’t open the WP-admin. I contacted the host and another agent tried to help me, but no results. It happened with three agents and the last one voiced her/his confusion, which devastated me. I lost any hope I had left.

My husband then tried his best to save my blog by reinstalling the WordPress account plus did other stuff (I had no idea the terms). After a few hours, my blog went alive, which was a HUGE relieved. But after doing some checking, I found out that a lot of my images were gone, even though my site had been backed up routinely and the last time was a day before the issue. It did confuse and devastate me, but nothing we could do, so I had to re-upload all the images to all the posts. Thank God, I have organized files for some posts, so when I uploaded them, it automatically showed up on posts without me having to rearrange them again. I couldn’t say enough how grateful I’ve since been.

If you are planning to have a self-hosted site, learn all the things relating to maintaining a self-hosted site before moving your site, or you can find someone to exclusively do all of them. You can also find the right person to help you. Having someone to help and/or arming yourself with the knowledge necessary to maintain the site is/are IMPORTANT. Don’t move your site before doing both or one of them.

Ok, that was the update of my week. I cannot, unfortunately, say that I had a great week but it was a great lesson. I learned a lot of things I would never do had it never happened, so I tried to see everything positively. Anyway, as you can see, the layout has changed. I changed the theme because I wanted a fresh start after the issues. I’ve redesigned my old theme three times in the last two weeks during the issues my blog had suffered, so I was kind of tired to do another one again, so I purchased a new one. I’ve had so much fun customizing the blog and I love the end result. It felt like a completely new blog and it’s boosted my blogging spirit. I hope you enjoy the new layout! πŸ˜€

Last week on the blog:

Now, let’s talk about what happened last week, reading and blogging-wise. Since my blog was off for three days and it took almost two days to customize the new theme, there were no new reviews published yet but I managed to post my weekly “latest book news” yesterday. Check out the link below if you haven’t yet.

New books and what I’m currently reading:

I am currently reading two books at the moment, both of which are awesome. I bought Ghosted last week but just recently started reading it yesterday. I hope you give them a try one day. You won’t regret it. Trust me!

Thank you so much to those who have participated in this weekly feature. There are EIGHT posts so far and the recommendations have been AWESOME. Check them out if you haven’t yet.

One of the books I’m currently reading (Ghosted by J.M. Darhower) is an awesome second-chance romance. It made me think of other books of this trope. It is one of my favorite tropes! S, our new Recommend Me Books post is about “Second Chance Romance.” Click the link below and please recommend me your favorites in the comment section of the post. 1. What a nightmare! I am so sorry you have had to deal with all those blog issues. I am glad you were able to save most of it in the end. I think the new look is great! I hope you have a better week this coming week!

  2. Oh, I can tell that I would never manage to survive a self-hosted site, as I like having people/administrators to turn to with issues that crop up, even after years of blogging on WP.

I like the look of your blog…and hope all goes well now.

Misconduct is a book I’ve been wanting to read. Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  3. Greg Hill

Sorry to hear about the blog problems! I’m glad you were able to restore it for the most part though- that can certainly be nerve- wracking! That’s one of the reasons I haven’t gone self- hosted, although I’ve been tempted so many times- I like not having to worry (too) much about that stuff. Knock on wood- watch something happen now lol.

Glad the Recommend Me! posts are going awesome. Have a super week! πŸ™‚

  4. I’m sorry to hear about your blog issues, I hope you won’t have them in the future! That said, I really like your blog! Have a great week and happy reading!

  5. You blog is beautiful but yep, moving is HARD!!!! Having a good host and understanding what is happening is really important. I’ve moved from Blogger and moved hosts multiple times, once all on my own without the host’s help and it isn’t easy. I remember that the pictures don’t go with the posts automatically and most hosts, who don’t specialize in WP, might not know that. It’s been so long since I’ve moved b/c I love my host and haven’t messed with files for years.

But look at your beautiful, FUN to play with blog!!!!!!! Missing a few days was worth it in the end, imho πŸ™‚ Have a great week!!!

    • Ohh thank you for sharing your experience. Oh glad to hear you haven’t had any issues for years. I hope the blog will sail smoothly from now. Fingers crossed. I’m afraid of being to enthusiastic as I was last week. πŸ˜πŸ™ˆ

  6. Ugh blog issues. When I made the switch to self hosted, I went with Ashley at Nose Graze because I knew I didn’t have the knowledge! Her hosting fees are more expensive than some, but its been worth every penny because if there is a problem, she is amazing!
Oh, second chance romances! Sounds like a great list idea!
I hope this week is filled with the absence of blog issues!

    • Geybie's Book Blog

I’ve been thinking about using her service too, Sam, but I don’t want to do any changes for now since everything is currently running smoothly. Maybe next time if something similar happens again.

Anyway, please recommend me your faves! 😁

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Oh I hope so, Karen. I don’t think I’ll be able to survive another issue. πŸ™ˆ

  7. Ugh! Blogging issues was the worst. On the plus side, your blog looks truly amazing. I love it! Ghosted sounds intriguing. I’ll have to check that one out. Happy reading!

  8. So sorry to hear about all the blog issues. I know what you mean though, they can be exhausting and so frustrating. I’m glad you’re back now and hopefully there won’t be more issues!
I haven’t read this book by Penelope Douglas, but I normally adore her stuff.
I hope you have a better week, Geybie!

  9. oh man, I am so sorry that you had so many bad issues with your blog!! I also routinely back up my blog, but I always fear I will lose everything or something will go haywire. But I do love the new design!! It has such a fresh look to it.

I am thrilled that you are reading Misconduct…I LOVE That book so much. I listened to that one and honestly I think I listened to it in one day—I loved it that much and the narrator was awesome too. πŸ™‚ I am looking forward to your review.

  10. Oh my goodness, I can’t imagine how frustrating not being able to work on your blog must be (makes me happy to stick with my blogger hosted blog for now at least because I would probably just cry and quit if my blog stopped working.)

I hope you’re enjoying Misconduct. It’s one of my favorite Penelope Douglas books.

  11. Oh my gosh… I’m so sorry you experienced blog problems like that! That’s scary… I’m glad you could resolve them all fine. Makes me want to go backup my website NOW…
Also, your theme does look great! Have a good week, Geybie πŸ™‚

  12. Jenea

Jeez, what a nightmare for sure! I started out on self hosted this time, but I do remember doing on my other blog before and it was such a pain. My husband is a computer geek, so he was able to help me before I pulled out all my hair. I’m glad you were able to make it through all that and everything seems to be working really good now. πŸ™‚ Enjoy the new book and your week ahead.

    Sunday Post

  13. I’m stressed just reading about your blogging troubles. What a headache! I’ve toyed with the idea of moving my blog off blogger but when it really comes down to it I don’t feel like I know enough to maintain it and I just don’t want to learn. Maybe some day though. I love all your Recommends posts though they are not good for my TBR. Have a great week!

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Oh it was a hard week for me. Thank you, Katherine. I hope you have a wonderful week too. 😁❀️

  14. Beware Of The Reader

I wish you a better week Geybie! I love the look of your new blog. I bet that now that you are self hosted you don’t see my blog in your ereader anymore though. One suggestion for your blog I don’t see the like button anymore…

    • Geybie's Book Blog

I’ve been self hosted since the beginning but I just recently got problems. The like button? I’ll check it out. Thanks for the info. ❀️❀️❀️❀️

  15. Oh my goodness! That sounds like so much drama and heartbreak! I am always so terrified that Google will make my blog disappear for some random reason that they won’t tell me. Self-hosted definitely has its benefits… and its drawbacks. Why are websites so complicated?!

In terms of books, Misconduct sounds good! I’ve not read anything by that author before. I hope you enjoy your new books!

Have a lovely week, Geybie. =)

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Self-hosted sites have lots of benefits, Alyssa. You just need to arm yourself with the knowledge of maintaining it. I didn’t so i learned my lessons.

  16. If I didn’t have a techie husband to iron out any issues for me, I can assure you that my blog would have fallen apart long ago and I probably wouldn’t be here chatting now. I’m okay with the day to day basics, but plug-ins baffle me and when they stop working after a WordPress update – that’s game over!

I hope that this week is a lot less traumatic for you and you can enjoy finishing your great sounding books πŸ™‚

    Yvonne

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Thank you, Yvonne. Last week was pretty great. I spent most f my time not reading though which is a downside but customizing the new theme. I hope you had a wonderful week. πŸ™‚

  17. The cover of Ghosted has me intrigued. Also, I think I’ll stick with my free WP blog and its limitations because I don’t know what I’d do if I lost content, etc. Honestly, I’m happy with my free blog. I switched from Blogger several years ago and never looked back. I hope that’s the end of your blog issues. Have a good week!

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Thank you, Mary. WordPress-hosted site is free of headaches. You do the the right choice as long as it makes you happy. 😁❀️

  18. Pussreboots

I’ve been self hosted for twenty years this past August. In all that time, the only times things have gone missing is because I’ve either forgotten to upload something or I’ve been too enthusiastic with cleaning up stuff from the server. Come see what I’m reading

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Oh good to hear. I hadn’t had any problems before, I did something wrong that triggered the problem. πŸ™ˆ I hope you have a wonderful week. 😁

  19. Kathy Martin

Your woes convince me that I will never have a self-hosted blog. I want a place to talk about what I’m reading. I like using Blogger because there isn’t much I have to do now that it is set up the way I want it. I hope this week is better. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  20. Love the look of the blog- my computer crashed last week and I lost all my files, and photos for good- oh and my operating system- only my blog pics survived, so if that goes down, I got nada! The trials of technology, but you are so right…I learned a lot and hopefully my blog will improve from this as yours seems to have!

    • Geybie's Book Blog

OMG, I’m sorry to hear that. I know the feeling. Trust me; what you learned will be good for your blog. I know how frustrating it was.

  21. carolesrandomlife

I am sorry that you have had so many problems with the blog. I know that it had to be frustrating. Have a great week!

  22. ViK

Yikes!!! That sounds like a huge pain. I’ve had issues too and after MONTHS of website going down spontaneously we discovered the theme itself was not compatible. Anyways, good thing you had all backed up and everything running again.

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Oh sorry to hear that. Months of website problems are exhausting. I hope you guys will finally be able to solve it.

  23. Woah…. What a week you had back there! Tech issues are so frustrating! Glad your hubby was there to help and glad it all seems to be better now (right?). I can’t wait to check out the new layout on my desktop – the mobile version looks good though! Clean and very functional! FYI. πŸ˜‰

    • Geybie's Book Blog

Thank you, Di. I actually haven’t seen the mobile version of my blog. Hehe.. I use laptop and iPad most of the time. I need to check out the mobile version of the new layout. 😁
